The Obama Administration filed suit on Monday against the state of Alabama’s enforcement of its newly passed immigration law.

The suit challenges H.B. 56, a law set to take effect in September that enforces some of the toughest immigration efforts in the nation. If put into effect, H.B. 56 would enforce the detention of undocumented workers, school children and anyone police suspects of being “illegal.”

“If allowed to go into effect, H.B. 56’s enforcement scheme will conflict with and undermine the federal government’s careful balance of immigration enforcement priorities and objectives,” administration lawyers said.
