A plan to redraw more than half Marion County’s 600 precincts and create new City-County Council districts was blasted today on Afternoons with Amos. Amos Brown, one of the city’s experts on demographics talked about the flaws in the precinct and district plan being pushed by Mayor Greg Ballard and the lame duck Republican Council majority. Also expressing anger and strong concern against the plan were three veteran Democratic City-County Councilmen – Brian Mahern, Vernon Brown and William Oliver. The three charged that Mayor Ballard purposely rushed through massive precinct revisions without the required review by the Indiana’s State Election Board. They also expressed strong concern about the GOP plan violating accepted standards of redistricting and possible Voting Rights Act violations. Brown and Mahern are scheduled to be part of the leadership of the new Council’s Democratic majority.
