Our community is rallying around the Girls Basketball team at Arlington High School. Tuesday the team played Bloomington South HS and were beaten 107 to 2. The news has spread across the city, state and the nation. With most expressing support for the young team. On Afternoons with Amos, Arlington and EdPower Athletic Director Bobby Wonnell talked about the team’s morale.
“Our girls are in great spirits. They’re ready to get back on the court. We take this as an opportunity to grow as a team. We’re ready to get back out there and play another game”. And Wonnell added, “A lot of our girls are playing varsity basketball for the first time in their life. This is a young and inexperienced group. There’s no quit in any of our girls or our coaching staff. We’re gonna keep getting better”.
Wonnell said his team’s confidence comes from their coach Ebony Jackson. A star player at Arlington, was team captain and a member of Indiana’s All Star High School Team. After graduating in 2007, Jackson played for Indiana and Ball State Universities.Regarding the game, Jackson told the Indianapolis Star “No it’s not OK but (Bloomington South coach Larry Winters) will have to live with that. If that’s how they want to carry themselves, that’s fine. I’m focused on me and mine and we’ll just keep going.”
During the game against Bloomington, Arlington’s only points were scored on free throw attempts. Arlington is one of the take schools that were takeover from IPS this school year. Arlington’s being run by EdPower which also runs the Tindley Charter Schools. Regarding the lopsided score people are responding on Twitter and Facebook with outrage over the score. Feeling that the game should have been called under a “mercy rule”, but the Indiana High School Athletic Association doesn’t have such a policy. What do you think? Should the game have been called?
