Community Connection: Supporting Black Businesses and Overcoming Challenges

In a recent episode of Community Connection, host Tina Cosby discussed the importance of supporting black businesses and overcoming the challenges that come with it. The episode highlighted the launch of “The Wealth Crawl”, a first-of-its-kind retail week for local black-owned businesses in Indianapolis.

“We want to encourage our community to support these fifteen businesses,” said Anita Williams, co-founder of the Indy Black Chamber and Program Director of “The Wealth Crawl.” “We have a QR code at each business, and when you take a picture of it, you’re entered into a drawing for a chance to win gift cards.”

“The Wealth Crawl” aims to promote black businesses and keep the black dollar within the community. Williams emphasized the importance of supporting local businesses, saying, “We’re trying to build wealth in our community, and we can’t do that if we’re always making other people rich.” She also highlighted the need for education and training, stating, “We have a four-week online class for those who are in the ideation stage, and then we have a ten-week class for those who have been in business two to three years.”

The episode also touched on the challenges faced by black businesses, including a lack of knowledge and expertise. Kevin, a caller, shared his own experiences, saying, “I think a lot of us got good product, but do we understand how to do business?” He noted that many black businesses struggle with basic tasks like setting hours and managing finances.

Tina Cosby also discussed the importance of supporting black businesses and the need for a more comprehensive approach. They highlighted the work of the Indy Black Chamber, which offers classes and training programs to help black businesses succeed. Cosby emphasized the need for a long-term vision, saying, “We’ve got to start at the bottom and build.”
