If you love hip hop and know your history, when you hear The Rock Steady Crew, b-boy Richard Colon a/k/a “Crazy Legs” comes to mind. People all over the world have been privy to see his world renowned impressive skills on the dance floor for over thirty years . Now Colon is giving viewers a daily cooking called, “Lunch Breaks.”
According to the New York Times, the idea for the webcast was birthed because of Colon’s desire to promote him being a DJ. The show debuted in June and now draws as many as 3,000 views from places all over the world. “I wanted to do something like D.J. Red Alert used to do with his afternoon show on Hot 97, and bring something to people on their lunch hour.” says Colon.
Cooking was an inspired afterthought: After eating takeout during the show, Mr. Colon, 45, decided to prepare wholesome meals live. Junk food and soda may be routine fare for some neighborhood B-boys, but not for one who still teaches and travels. “Putting a healthy meal on my plate is important for me as a dancer,” he said. “Not being the youngest dude in the world, I have to keep a healthy perspective as I get older.”
The Webcast, for which he is not paid, is his latest effort at using music and dance to cross cultures. Though not strictly a hip-hop show, it rests on his reputation as a pioneering break dancer who was among the first to go on tour overseas and appear in films and videos.
