It’s a school district that contains one of the top high schools in Indiana and the nation.  It’s the Pike Township schools. Recently, Pike High School was honored by The Washington Post as one of America’s Most Challenging High Schools.  And Newsweek Magazine/The Daily Beast honored Pike High School as one of their 2013 America’s Best High Schools.  In that list Pike High School was ranked ninth best in Indiana and second best among Indianapolis high schools. (Click to Read the Newsweek Report)  America’s Best High Schools Searchable Database The Superintendent of the Pike Township Schools Nathaniel Jones and Pike High School Principal Troy Inman appeared on Afternoons with Amos to talk about the district and high schools academic success and challenges at improving upon that excellence.  The Pike District and Pike High School are minority-majority school districts.  The percent of minorities in Pike is higher than in the Indianapolis Public Schools.  Yet academically, Pike schools have closed the achievement gap.  Pike High School has a 92.4% graduation rate, including a 92.6% Black graduation rate.  Principal Inman and Superintendent Jones told Amos and listeners about their efforts to get Pike students graduating on time.  And their success encouraged them to enroll in college.  Jones has been Superintendent of the Pike Township Schools for over ten years.  That’s the longest tenure of any Indianapolis area school superintendent.  And a rarity in urban education.  Click To Hear the Full Interview with Superintendent Jones and Principal Inman as they talk with Amos and listeners about education in Pike Township.  Runs 50 Minutes ©2013 WTLC/Radio One.
