Located in the United Northwest Area (UNWA) on Indy’s near northwest side, Christ Missionary Baptist Church has been a major beacon of Light, Faith, Hope and Social Activism for 94 years.  For nearly fifty years this great church has been pastored by the Rev. Dr. Melvin B. Girton.  But this week, the Christ Missionary Baptist family announced a major leadership transition as Pastor Girton will be retiring from an active role at the church in May, 2014.  To be succeeded by Pastor Michael E. Drane, Jr. Both Pastors appeared live on Afternoons with Amos this week where they explained the reasons for the leadership change in taking this venerable church in Indianapolis’ African-American community into the next level. Dr. Girton’s leadership in the city of Indianapolis and work as a longtime leader in the National Baptist Convention has left a lasting legacy that won’t soon be forgotten. Dr. Girton has also been a monumental leader in the church and a champion for social justice. A graduate of Crossroads Bible College and an ordained Baptist minister for over ten years, Pastor Drane served as an Assistant Pastor at Light of the World Church and recently started two church congregations.  He has asked members of his current church to join him in his new church role as he and the Christ Missionary Baptist family help build a stronger Christ Missionary church. Rev. Michael Drane will be Christ Missionary’s Senior Pastor-Elect and serve as Transitional Pastor beginning June 1st. Meanwhile Christ Missionary and the grater Indianapolis community will be celebrating and cementing Dr. Melvin Girton’s 50th year and his legacy as Senior Pastor for the next twelve months. With Rev. Drane being officially installed as the Senior Pastor in June 2014.
