IMPD to add more officers to street patrol

The city’s plan to put more police officers on the streets will be unveiled today.  Mayor Greg Ballard, Police Chief Rick Hite and Public Safety Director Troy Riggs want to shift about 100 police officers to help deal with an increase in violence.  There were 16 homicides in June, a 35-percent increase compared to the same period last year.

 

2 Bodies found in Capitol Street Home

Police are investigating after two bodies were found in a home on Saturday afternoon. The bodies were discovered in a house in the 2800 block of Capitol Avenue just after 1:30 p.m. Investigators are still working to identify the bodies, and an autopsy has been scheduled for Today. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 262-TIPS.

 

Puppy Dies After Firework Explodes In Mouth 

A puppy was euthanized Sunday after a firework exploded in the animal’s mouth, prompting an animal cruelty investigation. Elkhart police were called to the 1200 block of Main Street on Sunday to investigate reports of children throwing fireworks at a puppy. The dog, a pit bull mix, was less than a year old.  The puppy was found shaking and bleeding excessively, South Bend’s ABC57 reports.

 

1 Dead after shooting in Marion

Police are investigating the fatal shooting of a person late Sunday night in Marion.

Police there say the shooting happened at the intersection of Butler and Nelson streets about 10:15.

When officers arrived, they found one person suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

The identity of the person who was killed wasn’t immediately released.

Police expect to release more information about the shooting later this morning.

 

Sheriff Deputy Fired For DWI 

A sheriff’s deputy was fired Friday after being arrested for reportedly driving drunk on the downtown streets.

67 year old Alan Jones, a five-year veteran of the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, was arrested just before midnight Thursday on a DWI charge.

Officials said Jones’ blood-alcohol content was .13, almost twice the legal limit.

Police said Jones was driving an unmarked Sheriff’s Office vehicle at the time of the arrest.
