Acting Ass’t Att’y General for Civil Rights Jocelyn Samuels with Amos
The Obama Administration’s top civil rights enforcement officer visited Indianapolis, along with a top official of the Department of Housing and Urban Development to talk with Hoosier leaders about better enforcement of civil rights issues. During a Special Edition of Afternoons with Amos, Jocelyn Samuels, Acting Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights talked with Amos and listeners about the priorities of President Barack Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder in enforcing civil rights laws.

Samuels talked about the Justice Departments efforts at fighting voting rights discrimination, disability discrimination and racial discrimination. Samuels also told Amos about the Justice Department’s recent efforts to strongly encourage schools not to arrest kids for non criminal offenses. Part of the Administration’s effort to sharply reduce the school to prison pipeline. Samuels was in Indy to participate in a Civil Rights Symposium sponsored by Joe Hogsett, United States Attorney for the Southern District of Indiana. Hogsett talked to Amos and listeners about the importance of the conference and his office’s efforts to enforce civil rights laws through Indiana. Also appearing on the program and at the Symposium was Maurice McGough, Regional Director of the Office of Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity of the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
Ind State Police Museum
On the program, McGough talked with Amos about HUD’s role in fighting housing discrimination and described current housing discrimination issues. McGough specifically said that efforts by Indianapolis to encourage higher income people to move to Indy, must still adhere to HUD and Federal anti-discrimination rules to insure that the effort isn’t discriminatory. McGough also took calls from listeners on discrimination issues and was joined by Indiana Civil Rights Commission Executive Director Jamal Smith. 
The Symposium and the Afternoons with Amos special broadcast took place at the Indiana State Police Museum. A unique facility of memorabilia and history about the nearly 80 year history of the State Police. The Museum is located as part of the State Police’s Indianapolis Headquarters on 21st Street, just east of Road Road. During the Broadcast, Amos talked with the State Police about careers at the State Police.
