IMPD Chief Rick Hite

In the wake of community anger and shock of the beating of a 13-year-old girl and her 5-year-old brother by a 14-year old girl with the video of the savage beating last weekend in Brookside Park getting millions of on line hits and airing on local and national television, IMPD Chief Rick Hite is concerned about the growing violent tendencies of young people and young adults and underlying issues of mental health.  Chief Hite spent an hour on Afternoons with Amos talking with the community about the problem and what police, working with health and other community agencies are planning to help.  In the interview, Chief Hite was joined by IMPD office Sharron Franklin.  One of the Chief and Franklin’s concerns were three domestic violence murders in Indianapolis the past week.  Including the murder of a mom by an estranged boyfriend in front of the couple’s four children. Franklin and Chief Hite said that there’s plenty of mental health services available in Indianapolis. With most insurance plans, insurance for low income persons now covers mental health treatment.  But there continues to be a stigma toward reaching out for help.  Also in the interview, Chief Hite updated the community on the status of crime in the city.  Hite said that both homicide and aggravated assaults actually are down for the first three months of the year compared to the same period last year.  But with warmer weather coming, Chief Hite remains concerned.  The Chief commended the community for their recent cooperation with police in helping solve some outrageous crimes, including the kidnapping of two teens at gunpoint on the eastside.
