If you’re throwing a party, backyard barbecue, or family gathering there’s a good chance you’ll probably purchase a stack of red Solo cups for your guests to use. The Solo Cup Company has been making the “red cups” since the 1970s. Although the color red is not the only color the company makes, recent reports state the red accounts for more than half of Solo’s overall party cup sales.

And, here’s something you may not have known… the cup also serves as a way to measure your drink. The lines on the classic cup correspond to common fluid-ounce measurements. Beginning at the bottom, the first mark signifies one ounce, which is perfect for a shot of bourbon. The second line is for five ounces, the third line is for 12 ounces, the fourth line is for 16 ounces, and the final line is for 18 ounces.

Despite the exact measurements, the company says they did not create the lines on the cup for that reason. Click here to find out why they say the lines are on the cup.
