The family of Sandra Bland officially filed a wrongful death lawsuit on Tuesday, Aug. 4.

The suit names Texas trooper Brian Encinia, the Texas Department of Public Safety, Waller County, the county’s sheriff’s department and two jailers as defendants. The suit accuses them of being responsible for the Bland’s apparent suicide while she was inside the county jail.

The 28-year-old black woman was arrested and charged with assaulting a police officer after she was pulled over by state trooper Brian Encinia for failing to signal a lane change.

The Texas Department of Public Safety previously stated Encinia acted improperly in making the stop.
