The head of Indianapolis’ Ten Point Coalition is now backing off of his proposal to introduce “stop and frisk” as a viable crime-fighting technique in the Circle City. Reverend Charles Harrison called for Indianapolis metro police to implement the controversial plan in response to the recent surge in gun violence across the city. Harrison said he had a change of heart after several people said they had issues with a policy that would allow the practice. “Stop and frisk” is a tactic where police stop then pat down persons because of a suspicion of criminal activity. Controversy with the plan arises because its critics say it unfairly and disproportionately targets black people and other racial minority groups.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Chief Rick Hite clearly told members of the media this week that despite the proposal’s introduction, his department would not employ the tactic. Police in major metropolitan areas, like New York City have used random stops to battle crime.

Social media in Indy went nuts at Harrison’s proposed suggestion to fight crime, often turning from policy discussions to personal attacks regarding his motives.
