A community gathers today to start the formal farewell for a grade school principal, who was struck and killed by a school bus on Tuesday.  Visitation for Susan Jordan will be held today beginning at 2 p.m. on the north side at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church. The church is located on West 86th Street, just west of Meridian Street (100 W. 86th Street).  The visitation will run to 8 p.m. tonight. Principal Jordan’s funeral is Saturday, also at St. Luke’s, beginning at 3 p.m.

Governor Mike Pence is directing flags at state facilities in Marion County to be flown at half-staff tomorrow in honor of the Amy Beverland Elementary school principal and her ultimate sacrifice for her students. She reportedly pushed many children out of the way, sparing their lives before losing her own.

Principal Jordan served as principal of AES school for 22 years. Classes will not be held there today to allow the school community–teachers, staffers, parents and students to attend the memorial events that get underway today. Classes will resume at the school on Monday. Jordan was a mother and grandma. According to the Metropolitan School District of Lawrence Township, the family is requesting donations to the Susan Jordan Memorial Fund which is administered by the Lawrence Township School Foundation. To reach them, call (317) 423-8300. Principal Jordan’s family is also requesting donations in her honor at the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Human error has not been ruled out by police investigators as a cause of this tragic accident.
