A New York man was sentenced this week for the beating death of his unborn child after he attacked his pregnant ex-girlfriend, NewsOne has learned.
Torey Branch, 35, was given 25 years in prison on the charge of first-degree burglary and 2.3-7 years on a charge of first-degree abortion. Branch was found guilty of killing his unborn child after evidence showed 51 searches on his phone involving the sentence, “what happens if you punch a pregnant woman in the stomach,” and other questions about the impact of physical harm on a pregnant woman’s body. In March 2014, his ex-girlfriend Mia Jones, 35, planned to meet Branch in her building when she was attacked by two masked men.
Surveillance cameras showed Branch (whose voice Jones recognized) and another unidentified suspect hitting the 7 months pregnant woman around 22 times. Her unborn baby girl died in utero a few hours after the attack. During her testimony, Jones told the court Branch repeatedly asked her to have an abortion, which she refused to do.
In a press release provided to NewsOne, District Attorney Ken Thompson shared his thoughts on the sentencing:
“Torey Branch deserves to spend every day of the next 27 years locked away in a prison cell for his cowardly, brutal and simply inhumane attack on a pregnant woman that caused the victim to suffer horrific injuries, left her unconscious and needing two blood transfusions—all because he did not want her to have their baby.”
Branch was in a relationship with Jones on and off for nine years. His sentences – including one year for third-degree assault – will run consecutively. In total, Branch was found guilty of first-degree abortion, first-degree burglary, and third-degree assault by Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice Alexander B. Jeong last month.
