As we’re readying for tonight’s NCAA Tournament with two of Indiana’s schools—Indiana University and Notre Dame—prepping for their individual Sweet 16 battles, we’re also turning our attention from the college game to the activism side of the pro game. The NBA is giving signals that sound like the league might move next year’s All-Star Game because of a controversial new North Carolina law. The law Governor Pat McCrory signed this week, under the cloak of darkness according to some, limits local governments’ ability to enact LGBT anti-discrimination ordinances. This means no individual county or city can put in place local laws that won’t discriminate against the LGBT community which supersede the law of the state. Furthermore, local governments that try to do so, can be severely punished. The NBA said in a statement issued Thursday, it doesn’t know how the law might affect the league’s ability to “successfully host the 2017 All-Star Game in Charlotte.” Many consider this an attack on civil rights and equality. Many remember the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA) that was signed into law in Indiana in 2015 and the subsequent backlash against Indiana Governor Mike Pence. Legislators in that case settled on a compromise. Read more about the North Carolina story HERE.
This is a developing story, as is tonight’s NCAA Tourney action for the Indiana schools that are still in it, to win it. The Irish will start play, taking on Wisconsin at 7:27 p.m. Eastern, while the Hoosiers will finish the night with their game against number one seeded North Carolina at 9:57 p.m.
Good luck to both!
