George Zimmerman is auctioning off the gun he used to kill Trayvon Martin on an online auction site gunbroker.com.  The auction will go live this morning (May 12, 2016) at 11am, and the bids will start at $5,000.

Zimmerman wrote in the description on the auction site, “The firearm for sale is the firearm that was used to defend my life and end the brutal attack from Trayvon Martin.  Many have expressed interest in owning and displaying the firearm including The Smithsonian Museum in Washington D.C.  This is a piece of American History.”

Many are upset about Zimmerman’s decision to put the gun up for auction, but he told a Florida FOX affiliate that he just wants to “move past it.”  Zimmerman told FOX, “I’m a free American I can do what I like with my possessions.”  He has also stated that he has received numerous death threats since posting the gun for sale.

Zimmerman was found not guilty of second-degree murder and manslaughter in the February 26, 2012 killing of Trayvon Martin.  The jury’s decision sparked protests all around the country, and Zimmerman has continued to make headlines in the years since.
