Houston police arrested a former Marine on Friday and charged him with murder in the stabbing death of 11-year-old Josue Flores, CBS News reports.

Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner spoke at a news conference on Saturday about the arrest:

“We cannot bring him (Josue Flores) back, but I hope today’s announcement can perhaps bring a little bit of comfort to those who love him. Our minds search for answers that just aren’t there. What we do know is it was senseless, it was brutal, it was cold-blooded. And someone needs to pay the price for it and justice needs to be rendered.”

Authorities are struggling to find a motive for Andre Timothy Jackson’s alleged slaying of the schoolboy. Investigators have not found a connection between Jackson and Flores, CBS said.

The six-grader was walking home from school when eyewitnesses said they heard screams and saw the boy fighting off the ex-Marine. Witnesses said Jackson, who has an extensive criminal record, fled after Flores collapsed on the sidewalk. The boy died at a hospital from multiple stab wounds.

CBS said authorities at first dropped charges against Jackson, 31, because they found evidence that supported his alibi. But further investigation compelled them to arrest the man at a Salvation Army where he had lived since April.

Jackson is being held on $100,000 bond.
