Today is “Day Three” of the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia. President Barack Obama is on-tap to headline tonight’s speakers. At “Day Two” history was made at #DNC2016. Hillary Clinton is now the first woman ever to be nominated for President by a major U.S. political party. Delegates to the Democratic National Convention officially nominated Clinton Tuesday night in Philadelphia.  After the roll call vote that nominated the former Secretary of State, her husband, former President Bill Clinton addressed the delegates and said Hillary Clinton has spent a lifetime working to make other people’s lives better.  Other speakers tonight include, Vice President Joe Biden; former New York Mayor and Independent Michael Bloomberg is expected to appear and endorse Clinton; and Clinton’s running mate, Virginia Senator Tim Kaine, will take the stage to introduce himself to the nation tonight. Clinton will address the convention in person to close out the convention Thursday night.

Here in Indy…

Wednesday morning commuters and motorists were asked to slow it down in the townships and those bedroom suburban areas here in Central Indiana this morning. The school buses were out in force today because it’s the first day of school for many of the area’s students. Keep that in mind this afternoon as well. Children will be making their way home after a day ripe with learning.

Pastor Michael Jones of Progressive Baptist Church

Popular Indianapolis pastor and budding talk show host—one of our own—Reverend Michael K. Jones died unexpectedly on Tuesday at the age of 52. Jones served as the senior pastor of Progressive Baptist Church here in Indy. He was the son of late-Urban League President, Sam Jones and was a second-generation community leader in his own right. Jones served as the host of our community affairs talk show “Community Connection” here on Indianapolis Radio One station AM-1310 the Light, greeting listeners warmly on air right after lunch for two hours Monday through Friday at 1 p.m.—a role he stepped into after the sudden death in November 2015 of talk legend Amos Brown. A man of faith, academia and activism, “Pastor Mike” as he was also affectionately known, was making his new platform of service his very own—even bringing a bit of his love of Batman enthusiasm to the fray. He assumed the hosting post in March. Jones will be greatly missed. We, here at the station, with heavy hearts, offer our condolences to his family and to his church family. We’ll keep you up to date on arrangements when they become available.

The man who has Governor Mike Pence’s backing and possibly his campaign war chest received the nod from Indiana’s Republican Central Committee to replace Pence on the ballot in the governor’s race. Lieutenant Governor Eric Holcomb was chosen Tuesday to go head-to-head against Democrat John Gregg in the November race to lead the state.

Indianapolis Fraternal Order of Police President Rick Snyder and officials from the union asked for roughly $3.2 million on Tuesday to help pay for safety equipment that officers use in the field. They’d like to purchase protective vests, helmets and trauma kits. The FOP also wants state lawmakers to create a bill that would make the penalties for attacking a police officer greater.

Charges were dropped against the three Baltimore police officers still facing trial in the death of Baltimore’s Freddie Gray. The decision was announced Wednesday morning just as pretrial motions were beginning for Officer Garrett Miller. Officer William Porter was facing a retrial in September after a hung jury in December. Sergeant Alicia White was scheduled to go on trial in October.

After Hillary Clinton became the Democratic Party’s history-making official nominee for president, she thanked her supporters and said Democrats have put “another big crack in the glass ceiling.” Mothers who lost children to police or gun violence took the stage Tuesday night at the DNC in Philly. They are backing Clinton. Trayvon Martin’s mother, Sybrina Fulton, appeared as part of the group “Mothers of the Movement.” She urged everyone to cast their ballots this November. The shooting of Martin in 2012 by George Zimmerman helped draw national attention to the killings of unarmed black men. Fulton was joined by the mothers of Michael Brown, Eric Garner and Sandra Bland.

The man who attempted to assassinate President Ronald Reagan in 1981 is being released from a psychiatric hospital. A federal judge ruled  Wednesday morning that John Hinckley Junior no longer poses a threat to himself or the public. After 35 years of hospital treatment in Washington, DC, Hinckley will be free to live full-time with his mother in Virginia as soon as August 5.

The Food and Drug Administration could be considering changing its policy for blood donation from gay men. The current policy prohibits donation from gay men for a year following their last sexual encounter. The FDA announced Tuesday it’s establishing a public docket for comment about the matter and will take all recommendations into account.

Pacers forward Paul George scored six points as Team USA blew out China for the second time in a week, 107-57.
