With five of the most elite gymnasts in the world — Simone Biles, Gabby Douglas, Aly Raisman, Laurie Hernandez, and Madison Kocian — on the U.S. women’s gymnastics team, the lineup is pretty much shoo-ins for Olympic gold in Rio this year.
However, despite landing the third highest score on the team (and in the competition), 2012 gold medalist Gabby will not compete in the all-around finals because of “two-per-country” rule that “encourages diversity.” According to Yahoo Sports, the rule keeps “certain countries from completely dominating in competition.”
While Gabby, 20, won’t compete in the balance beam, she did qualify to compete with her teammate Madison in the uneven bars final. Simone, 19, will compete in the beam, vault, and floor finals, and Aly will rock the floor finals while Laurie handles the beam finals.
In addition to being one of the greatest Olympians ever, Simone’s top scores put her in the running to become the first female gymnast to win five gold medals in one Olympics.
