There’s a break in the case of the fatal stabbing of the 23-year-old woman we reported on Monday that happened by the side of Riverside Park. Indy Metro Police Detectives have arrested a 17-year-old female for stabbing and killing Mireya Arciga in the 2600 block of North Riverside Drive. Monday night just before 11:00 p.m., the juvenile suspect turned herself in at Indianapolis Metro Police Department headquarters. She was questioned at that time and arrested on a preliminary charge of murder. Right now, detectives suspect that the likely motive was jealousy. The case now heads to the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office for official charges.

Community members will stand against the criminalizing of children—particularly black children on Wednesday. Why? Indiana Senator Michael Young recently introduced Senate Bill 170 which is also known as the ‘Pharmacy Robbery’ bill in this legislative session at the Indiana Statehouse. This proposed legislation has some in our community up in arms because it would change the law and make it mandatory that a prosecutor would have to file criminal charges against teenagers, aged 16 and 17, in adult court if they rob a pharmacy. All pharmacies are included–stand alone businesses and those located inside another retail location like a big box store or grocery, or medical facility. Indiana Black Expo President/CEO Tanya Bell says, no. IBE released a statement on Monday. In it she acknowledged the concern regarding increased pharmacy robberies but turned her attention to the target of this proposed legislation. Bell said, there is already a provision that would deal with juveniles if they commit certain crimes including robbery of any place with a weapon and begged the question, “So why the need for this bill?” She also said, “Adjudicating our youth in adult court will also not deter these acts or advance public safety.” At issue is children in adult court facing adult consequences for negative or poor choices or because they were coerced by an adult into a negative action. WHAT YOU CAN DO: Join the opposition. Those who stand opposed will be at the Indiana Statehouse (downtown Indy at Capital Avenue and Market Street) Wednesday morning at 9 a.m. in Room 130 to stand against the criminalizing of youth. They invite you to join them.
A couple of social media scandals are plaguing two Indiana lawmakers…
Indiana State Senator Jack Sandlin is under fire for a meme posted on his Facebook page. Over the weekend, he shared a photo from a women’s march that said , “In one day, Trump got more fat women out walking than Michelle Obama did in 8 years.” Sandlin says he has no idea how the picture ended up on his Facebook and in “no way” represents his views toward women. The post has since been removed.
Also, a second Indiana lawmaker is facing questions about his social media account and the women’s march to Washington D.C. as well. Seymour State Representative Jim Lucas is under fire for a post on his Facebook page that shows a woman being pepper sprayed by an officer. The caption on the post reads, “Participation trophies, now in liquid form.” He thought it was comical. Lucas had a much different response than the other lawmaker Senator Sandlin. He dug in his heels. He says he’s going to keep it up. Note: There is likely no connection between this photo and the women’s march event that was peaceful all over the globe. This photo may have come from one of various President Donald Trump-related protests—some of which became violent.
INDOT is ramping up efforts to address potholes that have formed as a result of the fluctuating temperatures across the state. Officials say if you see a crew making road repairs, you should slow down and give them space to do their work. For priority repairs, travel lanes may be closed, even during peak travel times.
Demolition is underway at the long-abandoned RCA plant on Indy’s east side. Redevelopment plans for the 52-acre site haven’t been decided quite yet, but it’s being considered for a new criminal justice center. The plant has been vacant since 1995 and some say it’s an ‘eye sore.’ Demolition is expected to take about six-weeks.

The hashtag #OscarsSoWhite may have worked in affecting a shift to diversity in the entertainment industry. Diversity was obvious as the Oscar nominations for 2017 were announced Tuesday morning. Nominees for Best Picture include: “La La Land,” “Moonlight,” “Lion,” “Hidden Figures,” “Arrival,” “Hell or High Water,” “Manchester by the Sea,” “Lion,” “Fences,” and “Hacksaw Ridge.” The Lead Actor nominees include: Casey Affleck, Ryan Gosling, Denzel Washington, Andrew Garfield and Viggo Mortensen (for “Loving”). Meantime, Emma Stone, Natalie Portman, Meryl Streep, Isabelle Huppert and Ruth Negga are up for Lead Actress. Barry Jenkins is among the nominees for Best Director for his direction of “Moonlight.” Nominees for Best Supporting Actor include Mahershala Ali, “Moonlight,” Jeff Bridges, “Hell or High Water,” Lucas Hedges, “Manchester by the Sea,” Dev Patel, “Lion,” and Michael Shannon, “Nocturnal Animals.” .” Nominees for Best Supporting Actress include Viola Davis, “Fences,” Naomie Harris, “Moonlight,” Nicole Kidman, “Lion,” Octavia Spencer, “Hidden Figures,” and Michelle Williams, “Manchester by the Sea.” Nominees for Best Documentary (feature) include “Fire At Sea,” Gianfranco Rosi and Donatella Palermo, “I Am Not Your Negro,” Raoul Peck, Rémi Grellety and Hébert Peck, “Life, Animated,” Roger Ross Williams and Julie Goldman, “O.J.: Made In America,” Ezra Edelman and Caroline Waterlow, and “13th,” Ava DuVernay, Spencer Averick and Howard Barish. Senate committees will continue hearings today on President Trump’s cabinet picks. The Senate Judiciary Committee was expected to vote on Attorney General nominee Senator Jeff Sessions. But the panel’s top Democrat, California Senator Dianne Feinstein, plans to ask for a delay on the vote.

He’s back on a rant… President Trump contends there was widespread voter fraud during the election, despite no such clear evidence. (Unless he’s speaking of the Interstate Cross Check program and voter suppression—but that’s unlikely. Click the link to dig deeper about them and how they played a role in this past general election. Rolling Stone Magazine reported on what was going on prior to the election.) Here’s what Trump meant. He told congressional leaders on Monday three to five million “illegals” cast their vote during the election, robbing him of the popular vote win. Today, the president has meetings regarding bringing jobs back to American shores.
President Trump meets with the CEOs of Detroit’s big three automakers on this busy Tuesday. In advance of the get-together, Trump tweeted, “I want new plants to be built here for cars sold here!” The White House says Trump is looking forward to hearing the automakers’ ideas on the matter.
Former President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama are in the Caribbean. The former first couple left rainy Palm Springs, California for the British Virgin Islands Monday as they continue settling into their post-White House lives. It’s believed the Obamas are spending their time on Necker Island – the private retreat owned by Virgin Galactic founder Richard Branson.
Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton is reportedly improving after collapsing while giving his State of the State Address Monday evening. The Democratic governor was nearing the end of a 45-minutes speech when he slumped over and fainted. Aides caught him as he fell and the legislature was immediately adjourned. His son took to Twitter to say he was with his dad and that he’s “doing great.” He also thanked everyone for their concern.
Barbara Bush is out of the hospital. Doctors say the 91-year-old former first lady was discharged on Monday, after being admitted to Houston Methodist Hospital last week with viral bronchitis. Her husband, 92-year-old former President George H.W. Bush remains hospitalized, but has been moved from intensive care.
Genetically modified foods could soon be more readily available and this time in the produce section. Apples that won’t turn brown will be on U.S. shelves as soon as next week. The genetically modified apples could hit a group of grocery stores in the Midwest as early as February 1. The limited release comes after years of development, protests, and government red tape. The packaged, sliced apples are sold under the Arctic Apple brand. The Washington Post reported critics and advocates of genetically modified foods say the apple could be a turning point in the highly polarized debate over so-called GMO foods.
In Sports…
On top of looking for a new general manager, the Indianapolis Colts are also looking for a new home for their training camp. On Monday afternoon, the team announced it won’t return to Anderson University this summer. Local businesses and local fans are rather upset. Despite their reaction, the team isn’t offering a reason as to why they’re making the mad dash away from AU’s campus. The Colts say they’re looking at three possible new locations.
The Knicks avoided a fourth quarter collapse, pulling out a 109-103 win versus our Indiana Pacers at Bankers Life Fieldhouse Monday night. Paul George put up a game-high 31 points in what turned out to be a loss. Myles Turner chipped in 22 points and 10 rebounds for the ‘Blue ‘n Gold’, which is now on a three game skid. The Pacers will get two days off and return to action on Thursday when they visit Minnesota.
