New Birth Missionary Baptist Church, formerly led by the late Bishop Eddie Long has announced its new leader.  He is the Rev. Jamal-Harrison Bryant, pastor of Empowerment Temple in Baltimore.  The activist and sometimes controversial pastor will reportedly move to Lithonia, GA to take on his new duties.  With the move he will be shifting from an African Methodist Episcopal congregation to a Baptist congregation.

In a news release on Monday, New Birth stated one hundred thirty-eight candidates were considered for the high-profile position, and eventually, the list was whittled down to only two. The announcement, made from the pulpit of the DeKalb County church, was met with applause.

The transition comes only months after Bishop Long’s successor, Bishop Stephen A. Davis, resigned after about a year and a half and decided to return to serving the branch of New Birth in Birmingham, AL.

Bishop Long passed away in January 2017 after health issues.  He was 63.
