From the time Indiana became a state, Blacks have been involved in the political process. There have been Black Republicans in Indiana since the party began before the Civil War. After the Civil War, the political party for most Blacks in Indian and the nation was the republican party. That loyalty and support for Republican candidates continues for decades. The first Black elected officials in Indiana were Republican, including the first Black state legislator James Sidney Hinton. There’ve been prominent Black Republicans in Indianapolis politics as well. Jcoelyn Tandy-Adande, President of the African-American Republican Council of Marion County and two other members of her organization appeared on Afternoons with Amos to talk about the history of Black support for Republicans. And Republican support for issues over the years that helped improve the quality of life for Black residents of Indiana and the nation. Joining Tandy-Adande was Rev. Carl Kelly who also heads the Indianapolis Chapter of the Frederick Douglas Foundation and longtime community activist Reggie Jones. The discussion talked about the economy, jobs and voting rights. It’s a provocative and interesting discussion of why Blacks were were Republicans back in the day and whey Blacks are Republicans today.
