In light of last month’s #OscarsSoWhite controversy, Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith made a large monetary donation to the future of film.  The couple donated $30,000 NYU’s film school, as part of an initiative to help female filmmakers.

The donation will help cover the cost of submitting five female filmmakers’ work to the Fusion Film Festival.  The rest of the money will help finance student-created television pilots.

The chair of NYU’s undergrad film and television department, Joe Pichirallo stated, “Will and Jada Smith have a strong desire and commitment to the education of tomorrow’s storytellers, and we’re thrilled that they have decided to support some of our standout students and programs.”

The donation comes a few months after Jada explained her Oscars boycott wasn’t about her husband not getting a nomination, but rather the lack of diversity in Hollywood.  You can read more on the story here.
