Experience the Magic of the Indiana State Fair

Are you ready to step back in time and experience the nostalgia of the VHS era? The Indiana State Fair is in full swing, and this year’s theme is all about celebrating the iconic VHS tapes that brought us so much joy in the 80s and 90s. In this episode of Community Connection, host Tina Cosby takes us on a tour of the fair’s latest exhibit, Rewind A VHS Revival, and shares some fascinating facts about the fair’s history.

As we join Tina and her co-host Eric, they’re live at the fair, surrounded by the sights and sounds of the VHS era. They’re chatting with LeRoy Lewis, the director of Community and Media Engagement for the Indiana State Fair, who shares some exciting details about the fair’s new attractions and traditions. “I’m amazing right now, the opening day of the fair has come,” LeRoy says with enthusiasm. “My super Bowl time is here.”

The fair is a beloved institution in Indianapolis, with a rich history dating back to 1852. Did you know that it’s one of the oldest and largest state fairs in the United States? This year’s fair is packed with exciting events, including the legendary Four Tops and the Spinners performing live on stage. “Tonight’s Four Tops and the Spinners,” Tina says. “Six o’clock at the Spinners and seven thirty the Four Tops at the Hoosier Lottery Free Stage.”

But the fair is more than just music and entertainment. Tina is joined by, Joy Feuer, Curator and Co-Owner of The Rewind: A VHS Revival. It’s also a celebration of the VHS era, with a special exhibit showcasing a collection of hand-painted works inspired by iconic movies. “We’re bringing you back to that Friday night when you didn’t sit on your couch and say, ‘What am I going to stream?'” says the curator of the exhibit. “You went to the video store, you walked the aisles, and you had those moments with other people or your friends that you were with.”

As we explore the exhibit, we’re treated to a live painting area where local artists are creating their own masterpieces inspired by classic movies. “We’re tying into the baseball theme of this year’s fair,” the curator explains. “We’ve got Andre Parnell painting the Jackie Robinson story, which is going to be amazing.”

The fair is also a great place to learn about the history of the VHS era and the people who created the iconic movie posters and album covers that we all know and love. “We draw attention to the designers of movie posters that are often uncredited,” the curator says. “We bring them to the forefront, not the studio owners.”
