The impact of violence on neighborhoods has prompted at least one Cleveland City Councilman to cancel an annual community event.

On Wednesday, a group decided to push for using the money raised for the event to help improve the community and in turn help curb violence.

Ward 10 Cleveland City Councilman Jeff Johnson put the kibosh on Glenville’s annual festival and parade the first day of the Republican National Convention after a violent weekend.

Johnson tells WKYC Channel 3’s Hilary Golston three women in the Glenville community were killed in a short period ahead of the Republican National Convention.

For the public official, that was “the last straw.”

“I just didn’t feel comfortable inviting 10,000 to 15,000 people into the festival and watching the parade, when I have a gang war going on in the northeast part of Cleveland,” Johnson said.
