It’s a busy Monday coming down from the activities surrounding the official shift in power of this nation to all-GOP leadership (Presidency, Senate, House of Representatives). The Inauguration of President Donald Trump was held with lighter crowds than anticipated (where former Indiana Governor, now, Vice-President Mike Pence also took his oath of office) and women and others across the nation and right here in Indy stood opposed to the new president and his administration by taking it to the streets with a women’s marches and rallies that collectively drew millions. More on that below.

Indiana Veterans are meeting with State lawmakers and Gov. Eric Holcomb today at the statehouse. So, expect to see a lot of military uniforms in downtown today. They began their day with a march this morning at 8:30 a.m. from Military Park to the Indiana Statehouse.
The central Indiana mom accused of stabbing her kids to death is due back in court for a hearing Monday morning. Police say Brandi Worley admitted to stabbing and killing her kids after her husband asked her for a divorce. Worley’s trial is set for April.

Detectives with IMPD are continuing their investigation into an early morning fatal stabbing of a young woman on the city’s north side. It happened in the 2600 block of East Riverside Drive early Monday morning…that’s at Riverside Park. The 23-year-old –as yet unidentified– woman died a short time later at IU/Methodist Hospital. WTHR is reporting that this stemmed from a fight that began in a car that was traveling into the area from a bar on 10th Street & Lynhurst. The investigation continues.
IMPD also continues to investigate a shooting near the Indiana State Government Center that critically injured one person. An 18-year-old man was shot multiple times Saturday night. He was found near the intersection of Capitol Avenue and Market Street, but investigators say the shooting happened on the northwest side of the Indiana State House. Officials say the shooting wasn’t random.

A crowd of about 5,000 gathered here in Indy on Saturday for the Indianapolis Women’s March…a ‘Sister March’ to the Women’s March on Washington. Organizers of the Indianapolis event say they’re not upset that they didn’t see the record crowds like Washington, D.C. or Chicago. (We don’t have that population size.) Police gave the crowd size estimate for Saturday’s event here. Though none of the numbers are ‘official,’ the national march in the nation’s capital drew more than a half-million people, and Chicago’s march drew over 250,000. The ‘Mothers of the Movement’ were among the hundreds of thousands of people who took part in Saturday’s march and demonstration. The group is made up of women who’ve lost children to violence, especially in encounters with police. Trayvon Martin’s mother Sybrina Fulton, Eric Garner’s mother Gwen Carr and Jordan Davis’ mother Lucia McBath were among those invited to take the stage alongside singer Janelle Monae who encouraged them to chant their sons’ names as the crowd repeated “Say his name.” The event in DC was ground zero of hundreds of rallies that took place in every state in America and scores of foreign cities. The point of the marches was to protest President Donald Trump and his campaign rhetoric on women’s rights, LGBTQ rights, race and Civil Rights and climate change. Speakers and organizers offered several takeaways and next action steps at the marches. Among them were to encourage women (and like-minded others) to run for local office, get involved in the political process and take former-President Barack Obama’s advice to actively organize in local communities.

All eyes will be on the new White House press secretary when he holds a briefing later today. This, after Sean Spicer held a hastily called briefing on Saturday that had everyone buzzing and taking to social media. In his first appearance in his new role, Spicer accused members of the press of tweeting misleading pictures about the size of Donald Trump’s inauguration crowd. He claimed figures show it was the largest audience ever to witness an inauguration in person and around the world. Photographs and TV ratings dispute those claims. (Nielsen in-fact reports that 30.6 million viewers tuned in to live coverage of the Trump Inauguration Friday. That number makes it the fifth most watched in their reporting history. Ronald Reagan’s 1981 inauguration lead the list with nearly 42 million watching. Barack Obama’s swearing in as the first African-American president in 2009 drew almost 38-million viewers.) When asked about the controversy on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Trump adviser Kellyanne Conway raised even more eyebrows when she insisted Spicer was using what she called “alternative facts” in his briefing. He’s scheduled to meet up with the Press today at 1:30 p.m. Eastern.
This first Monday of President Trump’s administration will be a busy one. His public schedule includes an intelligence briefing, separate meetings with corporate and union leaders and a reception for congressional leaders. Trump will also have a get-together with House Speaker Paul Ryan.

President Trump is also facing a lawsuit that accuses him of violating the Constitution—the same document he swore with his hand on a Bible to uphold during his Friday Inauguration in DC. A group of ethics lawyers claims Trump illegally received payments from foreign governments. The allegations stem from Trump’s refusal to divest himself from his businesses. Former chief White House ethics lawyer for George W. Bush, Richard Painter told the media he believes there is more going on with Trump’s business ties than meets the eye and said the Founding Fathers anticipated this kind of action by a president so that’s why they added Article I, Section 9, Clause 8 to the Constitution—that’s the Emoluments Clause. At least 20 people are dead following a weekend of heavy rain, high winds and flooding. This is one of those call and ‘check on your people’ incidents. In Mississippi and Georgia, tornadoes and high winds claimed 18 lives. In northern California, a woman died when a 125-foot oak tree fell on her apartment. In Southern California, crews are searching for a body in a swollen creek.

Hundreds of people won’t be punching the time clock at the start of this new work week at General Motors’ plant in Lordstown, Ohio. The automaker today has suspended the third shift at the assembly plant, putting more than 1,200 people out of work. GM officials say they’re cutting back because of slow sales of the Lordstown-built Chevy Cruze.

The Colts are now in the hunt for a new general manager. Ryan Grigson was fired over the weekend. Colts owner Jim Irsay made the organization’s announcement Saturday, calling the move a tough decision, but one that was well thought out and right for the team. He also put an end to speculation about Coach Pagano’s future with the Colts. Irsay said, “he’s our coach for 2017.”
The Indiana Pacers are in action hosting the New York Knicks Monday night. Tonight’s game at Banker’s Life Fieldhouse has a later start time than usual. Tip is at 8 p.m. Eastern. The Pacers enter this match-up 22-and-21 on the year and hopes to end a two-game slide after a weekend loss to the Lakers and Jazz on the road. The Knicks record stands at 19-and-26.
We now know the matchup for Super Bowl 51. The Atlanta Falcons clash with the New England Patriots on February 5 at NRG Stadium in Houston. The Falcons seek the first Lombardi Trophy in franchise history, while the Patriots return to the big game to seek their second in the past three seasons.

Major League Baseball is in mourning today after losing two players over the weekend. Kansas City Royals starting pitcher Yordano Ventura was killed in a car accident early Sunday in the Dominican Republic. Ventura was a 25-year-old right-hander who won a World Series ring with the Royals in 2015. That same day, former major league infielder Andy Marte also died in a separate car crash in the Dominican Republic. The 33-year- was playing winter ball there in his native country. He previously had stints with the Braves, Red Sox, Indians and Diamondbacks.
