Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett is doing his part to keep our city beautiful and he’s encouraging Indy’s citizens to join.

Community leaders will join Mayor Hogsett in Douglass Park on Wednesday morning at 10:30 a.m. to announce the new “It’s My City” initiative which calls for Indy’s residents to help make Indianapolis a cleaner and greener city.

This initiative also tips a hat to one of Indy’s legendary former leaders, the late-Mayor William Hudnut. Forty years ago, in an effort to keep Indianapolis on the path of being a ‘World Class City,’ Hudnut challenged Indy residents to put litter in its place and showed them how to get that trash in a trash can with the “Hudnut Hook”–a love of cleanliness (next to Godliness for the former pastor) and a love of basketball in a state that’s fanatic about the sport. Hudnut’s efforts then, led to the founding of the Clean City Committee which grew into an organization that we affectionately call KIBI today–Keep Indianapolis Beautiful, Inc.

Officials from KIBI, Eli Lilly and IU Health will join the mayor today, as they all regularly partner in communities across the city on green-related projects, sometimes with hundreds of volunteers from their companies to get the work done.

Hogsett made the rounds to local media during Wednesday’s morning drive to unveil a new public service ad that is a ‘throw back’ in honor of Hudnut’s famous 1977 hook shot, seen in a PSA that aired then. Check out Indianapolis’ current mayor in his new version called “The Hogsett Hook” below.
