New Speed Limits Hit Indy: 5 Ways to Keep Cool When Traffic Isn’t Moving

If you’ve been stuck on 465 lately, sweating it out while barely inching forward, you’re not alone. Between construction, packed lanes, and this heat wave? Whew! Indy traffic has been on one, and nobody has time to be sitting still, especially if your A/C is on strike.

Here’s some news that might help: starting in July, the speed limit on most of I-465 is going up from 55 to 65 mph. That’s right, House Enrolled Act 1461 is kicking in, and new speed limit signs are coming soon. So hopefully, a few of those bottlenecks ease up and we can all stop feeling like we live in our cars.

Now don’t get too hype some areas will still stay at 55 due to construction or road design, and they’ll be putting signs up throughout the month. But if it gets us moving a little faster during that after work crawl? We’ll take it.

Between the summer heat, bills, and trying to juggle everything else in life, the last thing folks need is to be stuck in traffic with no air, running late, and listening to that one vent that almost blows cool air.

Stay safe, watch for the crews, and keep your eyes open for the new speed limit signs, and if all else fails, just keep a gospel playlist ready, roll those windows down, and pray your edges survive the ride.

If you get caught in the heat, these 5 tips may help you keep your “cool”

5 Tips to Stay Cool in Traffic (Even When Your A/C Ain’t Helping)

  1. Crack Your Windows Diagonally: If your air isn’t doing much, crack one front window and the opposite back window — it creates a cross-breeze that keeps the air moving without turning your car into an oven.
  2. Keep a Cooling Towel or Spray Bottle: Stash a small spray bottle of water or a cooling towel in your glove box. A quick spritz on your face, neck, or wrists can make a big difference when you’re stuck and sweating.
  3. Avoid the Black Seats & Dashboard: Throw a light towel or sunshade over your seats and dash when you park. That way, when you hop in later, you’re not sitting on the surface of the sun.
  4. Keep Cold Water Handy: Stay hydrated! Keep a bottle (or two) of cold water in the car. If you’ve got a mini cooler or insulated bag, even better.
  5. Plan Around Peak Heat: If you can, avoid sitting in traffic during the hottest hours (usually 3–6 PM). Leave earlier or later when possible — your body and your car will thank you.
