INDIANAPOLIS — Indianapolis experienced a surge in violent crimes, especially this past weekend, marked by numerous shootings, stabbings, and killings.

“It really averages out to be a person shot or stabbed every 3.5 hours and a person killed every 10 hours throughout Indianapolis, whether it’s on the north, south, east or west side,” Rick Snyder, President of Indianapolis Fraternal Order of Police (FOP), says.

A triple-shooting at the Carriage House East Apartments killed two people on Saturday and was followed by a vehicle pursuit. It happened on the east side of Indianapolis, near 42nd Street and Mitthoefer Road. Officers resolved that incident by taking the suspect, as well as another person connected to the shooting, into custody.

Officers also reported a double homicide on the west side of Indianapolis Sunday morning before 8:00. IMPD arrived at a home on West 43rd Street and Cornelius Avenue, finding two people dead from gunshot wounds.

There was also a triple-shooting on the Monument Circle in downtown Indianapolis on June 23rd. Along with the three people that were shot, several businesses on the Circle were damaged, including shattered windows. A suspect 16-year-old was preliminarily charged with carrying a gun in connection with the incident.

Separately, another man was arrested for shooting three people near the canal on June 21st, one of whom was 18-year-old Michael Bright, who was shot in the jaw. 18-year-old Cortez Starks was arrested and faces a preliminary charge for possession of a gun.

“Violence continues to surge and spin up through the summer,” Snyder says. “What we have been making clear is a clear indication of the lack of accountability that is occurring in our Criminal Justice system and violent offenders having no fear of consequences.”
