Almost a month has gone by without a peep from Colts quarterback Peyton Manning following the team’s loss in Super Bowl XLIV on February 7th.

Today fans got a little news on the quarterback, but its neither really good or bad.

Wedneday afternoon the team announced that Manning underwent surgery on his neck to fix a pinched nerve. According to a release from the team, Manning underwent the surgery in Chicago with Dr. Richard Fessler, and will not cause him to miss any of the Colts’ offseason workouts.

The release also said that the nerve caused pain of and on the last four season but had no effect on his preparation or his play over the past four seasons. It was determined by team physicians after post-season exams that it would be best to fix the problem now.

“While it never has affected Peyton’s activity on or off the field, the Colts’ medical staff, after post-playoff examination, thought it best to resolve the situation now,” said the team in a statement released to the media.

Manning right now is on his way back to Indianapolis after staying overnight in Chicago following the procedure, which doctors believed has resolved the issue with Manning’s neck once and for all.

This is the second time Manning has had work done over the past two years, having undergone two procedures to fix a bursa sac infection during the late summer of 2008. That ailment caused Manning to miss all of training camp and the entire preseason, but the quarterback was able to start all 16 games and pick up the NFL’s Most Valuable Player award, as the quarterback led the Colts to a 12-4 record and a berth in the playoffs.

Before the neck surgery Tuesday, Manning was recovering from one of the best seasons of his career that came to a bitter end. After throwing for 4,500 yards and 33 touchdowns to win his second consecutive Most Valuable Player award, Manning led the Colts to two playoff wins and Super Bowl XLIV.

In his second appearance in the big game, Manning was 31-of-45 for 333 yards and a touchdown, but is mostly remembered for his late interception in the fourth quarter that was returned for a score by the Saints’ Tracy Porter. It helped to seal New Orleans’ 14 points victory, handing the quarterback his first loss in the Super Bowl.
