A group of parents are upset with the Lawrence Township School District for charging them in order for their kids to ride the bus to and from school. Now, the Archdiocese of Indianapolis is suing because they claim the district violated state law.

The lawsuit stems from a decision to charge paraochial school parents a dollar a mile to transport their kids to school. Matters grew worse when a restraining order against the fee forced the school to cut busing altogether. It just shows how tight school budgets have become.

Renee Piper and Margaret Rohrback both have kids who attend St. Lawrence Catholic Schoool. St. Lawrence is one of two Catholic schools that were cut off.

“My mom doesn’t want to pay $20 {for me} just to ride the bus,” said student Joey Siertle.

For students like Joey, their parents now have to take them to and from school.

School superintendent Concetta Raimondi told Fox59 News that in Lawrence, they are having difficulty in their general transportation funds. At first, they had the plan to charge a dollar a mile, but now, that has been scrapped.

“I think it should be free cause my parents pay taxes,” said student Erin Rohrback.

Erin’s mom Margaret says even though she chose to send her daughter to a private school, she still pays taxes that go towards education. She believes her kids should be able to taking advantage of that.
