State lawmakers looking at voting on a smoking ban

(Indianapolis)  — A vote on a statewide smoking ban could happen in the Indiana House Public Health Committee this week.  Lawmakers say the vote is planned for Wednesday, but even with a possible vote by the full House next week there is no guarantee a ban could be in place before Super Bowl 46 next month.  Governor Mitch Daniels has included enacting a ban in his legislative agenda for this year. The proposal would outlaw smoking in most public places but exempt private clubs, casinos and cigar and hookah bars.

The speech begins at 7 p.m. tonight at the Statehouse.

State expected to receive millions after agreement reached

(Indiana) —  Indiana will receive as much as $20 million to $25 million in sales tax revenue as a deal has been reached with online retail giant Amazon.com.  The company says it will start collecting 7% sales tax by the beginning of 2014 on purchases made by Indiana residents. The agreement follows a lawsuit filed by shopping mall owner Simon Property Group against Amazon.com and brick and mortar retailers over what they identified as an unfair price advantage for all online retailers.  Online retailers don’t have to collect sales tax on purchases by residents in states where they don’t have a physical presence.
