President Barack Obama slammed Indiana Senate candidate Richard Mourdock’s controversial and uncalled for remarks about rape. Appearing on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, the President said “Rape is rape. It is a crime” and blasted Mourdock’s insensitive remarks. (see video above) The President’s statement came after a full day where Mourdock’s comment that God “intended” rapes and children of rape to happen generated a firestorm of criticism from persons in Indiana and nationwide. Prominent Republicans like GOP Governor candidate Mike Pence and Sen. John McCain demanded apologies. Many others strongly condemned the remarks. But at a news conference Wednesday, Mourdock only apologized for those who “misunderstood” or didn’t “understand” what he was saying. (see video below). . The controversy began Tuesday during the final Indiana US Senate Debate at Indiana University Southeast in New Albany when Richard Mourdock said “And even when life begins in that horrible situation of rape that it is something that God intended to happen.” That statement set off a controversy that will undoubted continue until Election Day.
