The crisis of the nearly 300 Nigerian girls kidnapped by the Boko Haram terrorist group was on the minds of Afternoons with Amos listeners who repeatedly brought up the issue during an interview with Congressman Andre Carson.  It was Carson’s first appearance since winning the Democratic primary last week.  Thanking the voters, Carson told listeners and the community about a May 15th event his office is sponsoring Youth Opportunity Fair where some forty organizations and groups that have internships, or summer job opportunities or activities for young people as young as four and up into the early twenties can learn about those opportunities or activities. The event will be held from 4pm-7pm at Shortridge High School 34th & Meridian.  Rep. Carson though commented on a number of critical issues including the crisis in Nigeria.  Carson praised the efforts of President Barack Obama and other nations, including African nations, to help Nigeria find the missing girls.  Carson expressed some confidence that Nigeria was now up to the task of finding their missing citizens, though he was concerned Nigeria didn’t take the problem seriously at first. Rep. Carson also was confident that American law enforcement and military personnel are involved in helping Nigeria deal with the crisis. Rep. Carson also reacted to news that Gov. Mike Pence is attempting to find a way to expand some health care coverage to the Indiana’s uninsured population. Carson wanted to hear more details from Pence and state officials on what they had in mind. Rep. Carson criticized efforts by Republicans to investigate, again, with a special House Committee charges of wrongdoing in connection with the deaths of American Ambassador to Libya J. Christopher Stevens and three others in the attack in Benghazi in September 2012.  Carson blasted the GOP efforts as an attack not just on President Obama but on former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.  Carson did say he thought Democrats would have a presence on the committee, despite the calls from other Democrats to boycott the proceedings. Listeners also brought up issues of veterans affairs, parental responsibility and more with the Congressman.  Click the Media Player to Hear Rep. Andre Carson’s Interview with Amos and Listeners.
