Marian Anderson was born in Philadelphia on Feb. 27, 1897. At an early age, Marian’s vocal talent was apparent. Her family couldn’t afford to get Marian formal training, but members of her church came to her aid. They were able to raise enough money for Marian to attend a music school for a year. In 1955, Marian became the first African-American singer to perform with the New York Metropolitan Opera. She is deemed one of the finest contraltos of her time.
