With a guilty verdict a killer is off Indy’s streets on this National Women & Girls Awareness Day. “Kim’s Thursday News & Sports Headlines” continue below…

Happy Thursday to you…

It took a jury a just a few hours to convict an Indianapolis man of the murder of a 15-year-old Ben Davis High School student. Police called William Gholston a “career criminal.” On Wednesday night, a jury found him guilty of killing Dominique Allen. Prosecutors say DNA evidence was key in this heinous case. What they found was Gholston’s DNA on Allen’s sandal, despite the fact that her killer set her body on fire in an attempt to destroy the evidence. Gholston will be sentenced for the teenager’s killing on April 15.

Investigators in Johnson County say a drug sweep has almost two-dozen people facing criminal charges. Authorities say they arrested 21 people in a raid on Wednesday. The suspects now face charges on everything from selling marijuana-to selling meth-to selling heroin.

One of the six people rushed to the hospital after a deadly minivan crash in Lawrence is dead. Doctors say the man died Wednesday after his minivan crossed the center line and hit a truck head on. Five others, including a child in critical condition, remain hospitalized.

As Carrier gets ready to leave Indianapolis to make a mad dash for Mexico, city leaders are looking back to the company’s last move. WRTV- 6 reports that back in 1983, the city paid more than $100,000 for Carrier to move from its West 21st Street headquarters to their current site. The land Carrier left behind was finally declared safe last month by the Environmental Protection Agency, but the federal agency says no one can build homes on the former site.

In a follow up to what turned out to be a deadly semi-truck fire accident on I-65 Wednesday…A little miracle. An Indiana firefighter is now fostering a little dog that just may have needed an angel. The pooch survived that fiery crash that killed her owner, 52-year old Tyrone McKinney. She quietly waited six hours in the scorched wreckage until rescue crews discovered her. Vets in Franklin say the dog is healthy and the family of the South Carolina truck driver is coming to get her soon.

In National News…

Five people are dead at a backyard party outside of Pittsburgh. Four women and one man were shot and killed when two shooters opened fire at a backyard barbecue in the suburb of Wilkinsburg Wednesday night. The suspects remain at large. There’s no word on what led to the incident.

Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton says it’s painful to see comments from voters who don’t believe she’s trustworthy. During a debate Wednesday night in Miami, Clinton said she is not a “natural politician” like her husband or President Obama. She told the Univision debate that she’s focused on working hard to help average Americans.

Marco Rubio is brushing off rumors that he’s going to drop his bid for the White House before Florida’s primary. Speaking before a small crowd in Hialeah, Florida, the GOP hopeful assured followers that he would be on the ballot next Tuesday.  Meanwhile, the four remaining Republican presidential candidates are gearing up for tonight’s televised debate in Miami.

Mr. T is among the mourners who will attend Nancy Reagan’s private funeral Friday. The actor joined the former first lady’s “Just Say No” antidrug campaign in the 1980s. The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation released the partial list of invitees that includes TV news personalities Katie Couric, Sam Donaldson, and Chris Matthews. She continues to lie in repose today, for the second of a two-day public viewing.

In Health News…

Experts have found a way to help patients who need a kidney transplant find a match that won’t be rejected by their immune systems. In a new study out of the University of Pennsylvania–one that experts are calling revolutionary–doctors have successfully altered the immune systems of patients to allow them to accept kidneys from incompatible donors. This is hopeful news for some dialysis patients in various stages of renal failure. Research also found that kidney patients whose immune systems were altered were more likely to be alive after eight years, than those who stayed on waiting lists or received a kidney from a deceased donor. Researchers say the new procedure can help tens of thousands of patients who can never find a match because their immune systems will reject almost any transplanted organ.

In Sports…

The second round of the Big Ten Men’s Basketball Tournament opens today at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. Four games are on the schedule which will keep downtown Indy bustling. Check out the details HERE. Regarding Indiana schools…Indiana and Purdue earned first-round byes and won’t see the court until tomorrow. Fourth-seed Notre Dame battles fifth-seeded Duke in the ACC Tournament in Washington, DC. Butler faces off with Providence tonight in the Big East quarterfinals at Madison Square Garden.

Indianapolis Weather…

Keep your umbrellas handy. Rain is in the forecast off and on today with a high of 59 degrees.

Finally…

Which political candidate has hot sauce in their bag swag? Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders, that’s who. Sanders supporters can now literally “Feel the Bern.” A New York City hot sauce company has created a special hot sauce inspired by him. Dan Frieber of Tango Chile Sauce says his Bernie Sanders hot sauce is tangy and zesty, flavorful but not overpowering, with a delightful kick from Jamaican hot peppers. Frieber says the limited-edition sauce is going for ten bucks a bottle, and ten-percent of the proceeds will go to the Sanders campaign.
