HIV/AIDS Information

The Indiana State Department of Health (ISDH) Spot Light report, as of December 31, 2015, there were 11,698 people living with HIV/AIDS in Indiana. There were 543 New HIV Cases Reported, Whites accounted for 326 (60%), African Americans accounted for 168 (31%), Hispanics accounted for 35 (7%), Other accounted for 14 (2%). Males accounted for 84% and Females Accounted for 16% for all new HIV cases reported.

For 2016, ISDH is recommending increased testing for women/African American women because new HIV cases at first diagnosis among women of color has increased 20%, AIDS at first diagnosis 43%; Among Hispanic women 4% and 14% respectively. Among white rates in both new HIV diagnosis is 74% and AIDS at first diagnosis is 36%.

Additionally, The Marion County Public Health Department Epidemiology report, as of December 31, 2015, there were 5,674 people living with HIV/AIDS in Marion County, and an estimated 834 additional persons living with HIV/AIDS who were undiagnosed and unaware of their status. The high HIV/AIDS rates of persons undiagnosed highlights the importance of HIV testing of people at high risk.

Per the MCPHD Ryan White Services Program Needs Assessment states African Americans make up 26.4% of residents living in Marion County, yet account for 43% of people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA). African Americans also account for 52% of persons newly diagnosed with HIV – the largest burden of the disease since 2012, and a rate of diagnosis twice the diagnosis rate of the county’s Hispanic population, and more than eleven times the diagnosis rate of Whites in Marion County.
