After standing vacant for more than two-decades, the P.R. Mallory building in Indianapolis is coming back to life. The building, located in the 3000 block of East Washington Street, will soon be the Purdue Polytechnic High School, a charter school that provides students with a STEM-focused education. STEM is science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The school which is in partnership with Indianapolis Public Schools as an “IPS Innovation Network School,” will also provide students with more than a diploma. It will provide direct admission to Purdue University after graduation. One-hundred-and-50 freshmen will be accepted into the inaugural class next fall which will start in temporary facilities on South Rural Street. By September, 2018, the P.R. Mallory Building will be ready for the schools’ usage. Officials estimate that within four years, the charter school will house around 600 students. If successful, Purdue will open similar schools throughout the state.

Here’s an important assignment. Make sure the local numbers in your phone have the 317 area code attached. You’re going to need those extra digits starting in about two weeks. Indianapolis is getting a new area code, 463, which means people will have to dial all ten numbers when calling the old 317 area code as well. The new digit requirement begins on October 15.

How do you improve an economy that’s consistently ranked as one of the best in the country? The two major party candidates for governor of Indiana split on that in positions they hold and discussed during the second debate of the Indiana Debate Commission. Republican Eric Holcomb told the crowd, gathered at the University of Indianapolis Monday night, the state needs to simply do more of the same. However, Democrat John Gregg said Indiana needs to increase wages. Gregg said wage growth in this state is stagnant. He consistently told the debate crowd Indiana is ranked 36th in per capita income. The third and final debate between Holcomb and Gregg before the November general election is scheduled October 25 at the University of Southern Indiana in Evansville at 7 p.m.

Speaking of Clinton…She picked up a heavy-weight endorsement in what some would say is an unlikely place, the world of professional sports. One of the most influential athletes in battle-ground state Ohio is endorsing Hillary Clinton. In a Business Insider editorial, Lebron James said that Clinton is the best candidate “to carry out President Barack Obama’s legacy.” The Cavaliers star also said she “understands the struggles of an Akron child” born into poverty. James’ endorsement could be critical in Ohio, a major swing state where Trump holds a slight lead. His decision will run in the Akron Beacon Journal which also backed Clinton.

Hurricane Matthew is slamming Haiti in what some forecasters are calling a “catastrophic event.” Cuba and the Bahamas are next in line for the storm that is increasingly likely to hit the Southeastern part of this country. Florida Governor Rick Scott issued a state of emergency on Monday and warned Floridians to make preparations now. Miami-Dade officials say there’s an up-to-70-percent chance that the area could get tropical storm force winds by Wednesday.

A federal judge has dealt a setback to Ferguson, Missouri protesters. The U.S. District judge dismissed the protesters’ $40-million lawsuit that alleges police used excessive force and violated their civil rights. The judge issued the order Friday and it became public Monday morning. The judge said the protesters “failed to present any credible evidence” that the actions by individuals were done with malice or in bad faith. He wrote that the protesters didn’t disperse when told to by officers, and they were given repeated warnings before they were arrested. The protesters were among hundreds who took part in demonstrations after the deadly police shooting on August 9, 2014 of teenager, Michael Brown.
