Southwest Airlines Making Changes: How It Affects Your Travel

I recently took a trip and flew Southwest Airlines and for the first time ever, I had to check a bag. I was expecting a hassle, but to my surprise, it was super easy and stress-free. Two free checked bags? Yes, please!
But what really stood out was being able to pick my seat when I booked. I didn’t have to worry about boarding early or playing musical chairs with strangers. It gave me peace of mind knowing I wouldn’t end up in the middle seat between two people I didn’t know. It just made the whole flying experience smoother.
Well… enjoy that freedom while it lasts.
Starting January 27, 2026, Southwest will no longer offer open seating. That’s right they’re switching to assigned seats. When you book, you’ll pick your spot, and seats with perks like extra legroom will cost more. While 80% of travelers say they’re in favor of the change, it does mean you’ll have to pay for your preference.
If you’re an A-List member or have a Southwest Rapid Rewards credit card, you’ll still have early access to the best seats. But for the rest of us, expect to see new fees based on where you want to sit.
I can’t lie, I enjoyed the comfort and convenience this time around, but it’ll be interesting to see how this new system feels in 2026. Would you pay more to choose who you sit next to?
