Interim Chief of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) Rick Hite made his first interview on Afternoons with Amos as Chief defending IMPD’s controversial zone policing system. In the system more police are assigned to higher crime areas leaving fewer police in many areas of the city/county.  This has caused many to complain about a lack of police presence in their neighborhoods.  Hite defended the procedure saying that crime is actually being reduced in many parts of the city.  Chief Hite talking about a recent reports that surveillance cameras along the Monon Trail weren’t working, Chief Hite said that despite perceptions, the city’s Department of Homeland Security, not IMPD, are responsible for maintaining those crime fighting cameras.  Listeners brought several issues to Chief Hite’s attention, including a lack of enforcement of school zones, officers breaking the rules and recent police action against alleged game members and violence in neighborhoods out in the Fountain Square neighborhood.
