What an honor and privilege I had to be able to meet an extremely poised and Down to Earth young lady. Gabby Douglas, winner of two Gold Medals at the 2012 London Olympics, including the Women’s All Around Champion, visited Indianapolis as part of the annual Kellogg’s Tour of Gymnastics Champions.  Douglas, along with some of her Gold Medal winning teammates and other members of the Kellogg’s Tour attended an event at Bankers Life Fieldhouse where it was announced that Indianapolis would host the 2015 US Gymnastics Championships.  At the event I was able to catch Douglas briefly to talk about her fantastic success at the Olympics, her ties to Indiana as her maternal grandparents live in Gary and what her future plans in life might be.  After my interview, I learned that Douglas will grace the cover of December’s Essence Magazine as part of their “Women of the Year” issue. Gabby Douglas will be honored along with First Lady Michelle Obama, and ABC’s Robin Roberts. Gabrielle (Gabby) Douglas was born on New Year’s Eve 1995 in Virginia Beach, Virginia.  She began her gymnastics career at age 6, becoming Virginia State gymnastics champion at age 8. She burst on the international stage last year when she was part of the US team that captured gold at the 2011 World Championships.  And then this year she made history at the Olympics and brought much pride to our nation and to African-Americans everywhere.
