It was a rocky first year of operation for Charter Schools USA, the Florida based charter school operator that took over academic operation of three IPS schools – Manual and Howe High Schools and Emma Donnan Middle Schools.  The first months of the schools operation were rocky. With discipline and other problems.  Enrollment was below projections.  Indiana Department of Education officials weren’t pleased with some of the initial results.  After the first year of operation, the three schools still have “F” grades in the state’s new A-F Accountability grading system.  But at the halfway point of their second year of operations, Charter Schools USA is pointing to signs of progress in the operation of the schools.

In an extensive interview on Afternoons with Amos, Charter Schools CEO Jon Hage and Chief Academic Officer Sherry Hage appeared live to talk about their year and a half of operation.  Both Hage’s talked about the schools’ academic progress, what they felt this did wrong, what they did right and would have done differently.  They talked about the academic progress they feel their schools and students and teachers are making.  And they talked about their progress in building a culture of academic excellence and “rigor” at the three schools.  The Hage’s also talked about changes in the education landscape in Indiana since they took over the schools; including a new focus on career (vocational) education and changes in how Indiana deals with the controversial Common Core standards.  Click the Arrow To Hear’s Amos’ Interview with Charter School USA’s Jon and Sherry Hage.
