There is another side of Dr. Laura as well. She is also the woman who has now apologized profusely for using the N-word a total of 11 times on her show in order to try to make a point. She wasn’t making a good point, nor was it funny or intelligent. It is a point that has probably gotten her close to being fired, which I am sure explains why she is apologizing.
My advice to Dr. Laura: Learn a thing or two from Rush Limbaugh. You can’t boldly go where no ambiguously racist woman has gone before, and then crawl back into a cave and apologize. Your enemies will eat you alive, and Keith Olbermann is surely licking his chops. The point should never have been made in the first place, and I can’t help but question the logical capability of someone who gets so caught up in her radio show that she commits one of the greatest no-nos in all of media. Dr. Laura would have been better off sticking to her argument and not apologizing, since her apology does nothing to minimize the sting of her pre-meditated assault on the African American community.
Without question, Dr. Laura needs to be fired. Even the most racially extreme Right Wing Republicans want to believe that they are not racists, and one way they keep their belief in tact is by almost never using the N-word in any context. If there was ever any doubt that Dr. Laura and other members of the Right Wing are racists, all doubt has been officially removed. To presume that the use of a version of the n-word by black comedians is equivalent to the variant being used by conservatives is absolute non-sense. That would be like my hearing a woman refer to another woman with the b-word and believing that it’s ok for me to refer to all women in the same derogatory way.
America is a country that has long been divided by race. I remain amazed that African Americans, who constitute only 13 percent of our nation’s population, can get so much attention from conservatives. Their desire to consistently push racial buttons and undermine both equality and unity in America is a modern day reflection of how history shapes our lives until this day.
Dr. Laura, your apology is accepted. After you finish apologizing, groveling and doing everything else your corporate planners come up with, I still want you to be fired. Taking yourself off the air permanently is the only way you can convince me that you are truly sorry for what you’ve done. Anything less is just rhetoric.
