It has been almost 30 years since a grocer entered the marketplace in Indianapolis’ downtown landscape. This ends on Thursday when Marsh opens its doors on a “Marsh the Marketplace.” Officials with Marsh grocery stores say it will meet the needs of urban customers who are part of a new surge of residential living downtown. The 43,000-square-foot store is set to open on the first floor of the Axis mixed-use complex at Michigan Street and Senate Avenue.

The new Marsh will have an expanded lineup of grab-and-go sections, coffee-tea bar, Noble Roman’s Pizza and a mezzanine seating area.  Though this project is met with tons of excitement for downtown and near-downtown dwellers, it has its critics who say this store does not meet the needs of addressing “food deserts” which are areas where lower income residents do not have access to healthy fresh food options and conveniently located grocery stores that provide them.

The new Marsh will open Thursday at 6 a.m. Grand opening festivities begin at 8:30 a.m.
