Delano Wilson AMBER ALERT Abducted BabyThe FBI is now joining the search for an infant who has disappeared. Six-week-old Delano Wilson was reportedly snatched from his father and authorities issued an AMBER Alert but so far the baby is still missing, prompting the feds to join in the search. Authorities searched the area where the infant was last seen—near Harding and Henry Streets–on Thursday. They also expanded their efforts into a nearby wooded area and the White River.

Indiana is getting a one-year extension on its “No Child Left Behind” waiver.  The state was told in April that its waiver, first granted in 2012, was in jeopardy because of a failure to follow through on promises made in the original waiver plan.  This decision, announced on Thursday, means Indiana’s schools will not lose flexibility over how they invest federal education dollars.

A decision on whether to provide 24-hour access to the city’s trails and greenways is being postponed until next month. The Indianapolis Parks Board says they need more time to study the implications. A spokesman for the mayor’s office says safety is the first priority and in most places, the paths are dark. The city’s trails and greenways are currently closed from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.

The Indiana Department of Workforce Development is getting a new leader.  State Representative Steve Braun will be the agency’s next commissioner. Braun will officially take the reins once his term ends in mid-November. Current Commissioner Scott Sanders will stay with the department as senior deputy commissioner and will oversee the Unemployment Insurance division. Governor Mike Pence announced the changes on Thursday.

The school year at Indiana University-Bloomington has opened with tragedy. Police do not suspect foul play in the death of an IU student at a sorority house on campus.  IU police were called to the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority house around 8 o’clock Thursday night. No further information is being released in the case until the student’s parents are notified.

What’s for lunch today???  More than 15 food trucks will be serving up tasty lunchtime fare on this last workday before the long holiday weekend. On Friday in the west block of Georgia Street in in downtown Indy the food trucks will be open from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.  The choices will include barbecue, Mexican food and more.  For more details, check out the Food Truck Locator HERE.

If you’re looking for something to do this weekend that doesn’t involve you cooking, Devour Downtown Summerfest 2014 continues through this holiday weekend with more than 70 restaurants in the heart of Indy offering three-course, value-priced menus until this Sunday, Aug. 31. Devour Downtown has been growing since 2005 when it began with just 25 restaurants. It’s grown in participants including venues to offer a full evening out on the town adding more to the experience than just dinner.

On the ninth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina making landfall, word comes that the Gulf Coast is still feeling the effects of that monster storm. In 2005, Hurricane Katrina tore into the coast, devastating New Orleans and surrounding areas.  Katrina is estimated to have caused more than $81-billion in damage, while killing more than 1,500 people in Louisiana.

 

Hillary Clinton is speaking for the first time about the recent unrest in Ferguson, Missouri following the killing of unarmed teen Michael Brown.  In a speech in San Francisco Thursday, Clinton said “we cannot ignore the inequities” in America’s justice system.

Meanwhile…

The Los Angeles Police Department is releasing the names of the two officers involved in the controversial Ezell Ford deadly shooting.  Officers Sharlton Wampler and Antonio Villegas have been identified as the officers involved in the August 11th shooting in South Los Angeles.  Officials have claimed Ford, who family members say was mentally ill, grabbed an officer and tried to take his gun.  The shooting has prompted numerous protests in Los Angeles.

Peter Travers and Editors of Rolling Stone Host Awards Weekend Bash at Drai's Hollywood - Red CarpetThe world is sending get-well wishes to legendary comedienne Joan Rivers. The 81-year-old funny lady was having a routine vocal chord surgery Thursday when she stopped breathing in her doctor’s office in New York. Doctors say she’s now in a medically induced coma and listed in critical condition, but is said to be resting comfortably at Mount Sinai Hospital there. Her daughter, Melissa, and grandson rushed across country to be by her side.

Sports:

It’s a winless preseason for the Indianapolis Colts. They lost to the Cincinnati Bengals Thursday night on the road 35-to-7. Up next…the season opener where the Colts will hit the road to meet Peyton Manning and the Broncos in Denver on September 7th.

The Indiana Fever will host Game One of the WNBA Eastern Conference Finals Saturday night at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. Indiana takes on the Chicago Sky. The best-of-three series then shifts to Chicago.

 

Tony Stewart is ready to return to the track. The embattled NASCAR driver will race in this Sunday’s Sprint Cup event at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Stewart has missed three races since his car struck and killed driver Kevin Ward Jr on a track in upstate New York earlier this month.

Weather:

The threat of thunderstorms and possible heavy rain could disrupt people’s outdoor plans this Labor Day weekend. Heavy rain from Saturday night into Sunday morning could cause flooding in some parts of the metro Indy area.
