When a respected national sports anchor speaks, many in America listen. When that respected national sports anchor speaks, and she happens to be a woman and the topic is calling out a professional sports league that she covers day-in and day-out on their response to domestic violence–which deeply impacts women–then we all should pay attention. This national sports anchor is ESPN’s Hannah Storm. Storm delivered a poignant and emotion-filled “drop the mic” speech to close out a recent episode ofSportsCenter. Don’t expect the rolling of the neck, and the serving of attitude to make a point. Storm isn’t in the club on a stage. She responds to the foolishness unfolding before all of our eyes in the National Football League as a grown, thinking, professional woman who must communicate effectively for change. In it, she describes being a mother who has had to explain this growing NFL crisis regarding these incidents of domestic (former Baltimore Raven’s running back Ray Rice) and other violence (deactivated Minnesota Vikings back Adrian Peterson) to her daughters. She also puts the NFL in the hot seat regarding their reaction and actions to address these serious issues by begging burning questions including, “Exactly what does Zero Tolerance mean to the NFL?”
