This Sunday we will see the dramatic portrayal of that great event when the dwelling place of God came to be within the disciples, and through their witness spread to the entire world.

We refer to that day as Pentecost. In the Jewish faith, Pentecost is the day celebrating the giving of the law of Moses at Mount Sinai. That law was meant to be a guide to the people of God for their lives as it revealed the will of God for them as a people. That law also set them apart as a people. On the day of Pentecost, we’ll see this Sunday on “A.D.,” God sent the Spirit that his will and guidance would dwell within his people.

Scripture says:

Acts 2

When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.

Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken. Utterly amazed, they asked: “Aren’t all these who are speaking Galileans? Then how is it that each of us hears them in our native language? Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome 11 (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs—we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!” 12 Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, “What does this mean?”

13 Some, however, made fun of them and said, “They have had too much wine.”

Have you ever been around someone completed enveloped by the Holy Spirit? They are alive and joyful and filled. You are often ispired by their lives, actions and spirit.

The Holy Spirit is the third person in the Trinity.  He is fully God. He is eternal, omniscient, omnipresent, has a will, and can speak.  He is alive.  He is a person.  He is not particularly visible in the Bible because His ministry is to bear witness of Jesus (John 15:26). The Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father and the Son. The Holy Spirit does not proceed from the Father and the Son by spiritual generation. Only the Son proceeds from the Father by generation. This is one of the mysterious truths that we know only from revelation.

The Holy Spirit dwells in the Church as the source of its life and sanctifies souls through the gift of grace. Although the sanctification of mankind, like all other outward works of God, is performed by all three Persons of the Blessed Trinity, it is attributed to the Holy Spirit, the third Person. The sanctification of mankind is attributed to the Holy Spirit because He is the love of the Father and the Son and because the sanctification of man by grace shows forth God’s boundless love.
