Kim’s Monday News & Sports Headlines. (Here’s what you’ll talk about at the water cooler today…)

Jail breaks are in the headlines on this Monday as severe weather moves through our area…

On the national scene, the woman accused of helping two convicted murderers escape from an upstate New York maximum-security prison is due in court today. Joyce Mitchell pled not guilty Friday to charges of criminal facilitation and promoting prison contraband. Authorities say she gave Richard Matt and David Sweat hacksaw blades, chisels, and a screwdriver bit among other things. The manhunt for Matt and Sweat now enters its tenth day today.

Here in Indiana, Randolph County authorities are searching for an inmate who escaped the county jail just after 3:15  this morning. The Randolph County Sheriff’s Department is looking for Robert Dean Lewis. The 26-year-old is described as is a white male, 5’6″, 185 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes. He was wearing a yellow jumpsuit with “Trustee” on the back and was last seen heading away from the jail to the south. Officials say Lewis was cleaning the lobby of the jail, and when the jail officer went to gather trash from the public restroom, he ran out the front doors to make his escape.

It was a violent weekend in Indy and there are multiple incidents to tell you about…

Two people are in critical condition after a domestic disturbance escalated into a police shooting. Indianapolis metro police say officers were responding to a burglary call just after midnight Sunday when it happened.  They say a man broke into the duplex of his ex-girlfriend and shot her in the face. Officers claim they heard screaming and gunshots and they responded by shooting the suspect fearing he would further injure the woman.

A separate incident turned deadly. In this one, a man died after being shot several times on the near north side. IMPD officers say the victim was shot around 6 a.m. Sunday morning on West 27th Street.  They haven’t identified any suspects or a motive in the incident.

On Sunday night in a north side apartment complex near St. Vincent Hospital, two more people were shot, according to police in the 1700 block of Centurion Parkway. This happened just before midnight when an argument in the complex’s parking lot escalated to gunfire. A man in his 30’s was shot and a second victim inside a first floor apartment near that parking lot was grazed by a stray bullet. The man was taken to St. Vincent with non-life-threatening injuries. The graze victim was treated on the scene.

In yet another incident at a hotel that’s now becoming known for violent incidents, there was another shooting. The hotel is the Rodeway Inn, located in the 3500 block of North Shadeland Avenue on the city’s east side. There IMPD took another “gunshots fired” call Sunday night and found a man with two gunshot wounds. He was taken to Eskenazi Hospital in critical condition. You’ll recall there was a shooting death at that same hotel early Friday morning. If you have any info on any of these cases, call Crime Stoppers at (317) 262-TIPS.

The state also felt its fair share of violence too over the weekend. In Ft. Wayne, a man is dead from a shooting involving Fort Wayne police. Police there, say it happened Sunday night when the suspect answered the door with a gun and refused to put it down. So far, police haven’t said if the man fired or pointed the gun at them, but they shot and killed him.

Week two of the trial for Richmond Hill explosion suspect—the guy who’s believed to be the mastermind behind the whole thing—Mark Leonard is getting underway at today at noon. That’s when court is scheduled to resume in South Bend. Those who had to have their homes demolished because of the 2012 blast are expected to testify this week. Also expected to take the stand this week are employees from Citizens Energy Group. They’ll talk about natural gas and what they believe caused the explosion that ripped through the neighborhood destroying or severely damaging 80 homes and killing a young couple who were in the house next to the epicenter of the blast.

The family of a little boy hit by a truck is asking the driver to do the right thing and come forward. Seven-year-old SayVion Miller was struck last Wednesday at 30th and Dearborn Streets while riding his bike. The accident shattered his left leg. Miller’s family says it might have been a U-Haul truck that hit him.

Hazmat crews are cleaning up what’s left from an ammonia spill in Speedway. It happened Sunday night at the Coca-Cola plant located near the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Officials say crews were transferring liquid ammonia when it was either spilled or leaked from the container.  There were no injuries reported.

Organizers of Indy Pride say record numbers turned out for the pride parade on Saturday. More than 100,000 people were estimated to have attended.  More than 120 organizations and groups took part in the celebration of the LGBTQ community.

Former Florida Governor Jeb Bush officially becomes a presidential candidate today joining the crowded Republican field seeking the nomination. Bush will be joined by supporters Monday afternoon at Miami Dade College’s Kendall campus.

Rachel Dolezal, the NAACP leader in Washington state who is under fire for allegedly lying about her ethnicity is canceling a meeting where she was expected to address her racial identity. The Spokane NAACP Chapter President sent an email on Sunday night to NAACP members saying Monday night’s chapter meeting is postponed. She said the reason was continuing discussion with regional and national NAACP leaders. Dolezal’s parents, Larry and Ruthanne Dolezal have told the world that their daughter is Caucasian, is their birth child and that they don’t understand why she isn’t being honest about who she really is. They told NBC’s Today Show on Monday morning that the reason they came out about their daughter’s ethnicity was simply because they were asked. They said they raised all six of their kids to tell the truth and that’s what they did.

There’s a nearly $2 billion dollar deal breaking in business news this morning…

The number two largest pharmacy chain and number two largest retailer are doing business. They’re CVS and Target. CNBC reports that CVS Health will pay $1.9 billion for Target’s pharmacy and clinic businesses. CVS will buy close to 1,700 Target pharmacies across 47 states, including here in Indiana, and operate them as stores-within-stores.

At the movies:

Dinosaurs are at the top of the food chain in the world once again at least at the box office. “Jurassic World” took a bite out of the theater’s box office totals this weekend here in the U.S., while it also set a new record for the highest global haul of all-time. The dino thriller made just under $512 million worldwide, making it the first time a film has grossed more than $500 million in a single weekend. That means movie goers didn’t run screaming from the big beasts. They instead ran straight to them, embracing them with open arms and pocketbooks.

In Sports:

The Indiana Fever took time out to honor an Indiana basketball star who lost her battle with brain cancer but went out doing good for others. Nineteen-year-old Lauren Hill played basketball at Mount Saint Joseph University in Cincinnati and died in April after a lengthy battle with the disease. At Sunday night’s game at Bankers Life Fieldhouse, Hill was made an honorary member of the Fever and her jersey was placed the team bench. The game also featured a silent auction and $300 for every layup made, was donated to the cancer research foundation founded by Hill called The Cure Starts Now.

The Golden State Warriors are just a game away from claiming the NBA championship in the NBA Finals. They beat the Cleveland Cavaliers in Game Five Sunday night in Oakland with a 104-91 win. Stephen Curry poured in 37 points to lead Golden State while LeBron James posted another triple-double for the Cavs in what turned out to be a losing effort. James finished with 40 points, 14 rebounds and 11 assists. The Warriors can finish this and get the ring Tuesday as Game Six heads back to  Cleveland.
