The Afternoons with Amos PODCAST for Monday, June 22, 2015. (Story/Interview Begins At 50:53 Mark On PODCAST Media Player). Frustrated with the low numbers of Indiana low-income, first-generation and minority students, including African-American, who are not prepared for success in college, especially at Purdue, top officials at Purdue University are taking direct action. The university is planning to develop and open Purdue Polytechnic Indianapolis High School, which will be a charter high school designed to provide a bridge for inner-city students and others to succeed in high school and to be admitted directly to Purdue University. The school will open in August 2017, and probably be chartered through the City of Indianapolis.

Mitch Daniels

In an exclusive live Afternoons with Amos interview, Purdue President and former Governor Mitch Daniels talked about the efforts.  Daniels said the frustration has come about because of the low numbers of Black and other minority students who equal the average entrance scores and GPA’s of Purdue entering freshman.  According to data supplied by the College Board, which supervises the SAT tests, of the 48,000 Indiana high school graduates in 2014 who took the SAT, only 101 college-bound African Americans and 156 Latinos had SAT scores and GPA’s in the range of the average Purdue freshman. Among those same graduates, only 7 college-bound African Americans and 16 Latinos had SAT scores and high school GPA’s in the range of the top 15% of Purdue freshmen. In the interview, President Daniels said that the curriculum will be developed by Purdue faculty and that they and some students would serve as mentors and perhaps faculty and other teachers hired would do the instructing. In the interview, Daniels also talked explained why Purdue wouldn’t be the chartering entity and talked about that if this is successful in increasing the numbers of students with STEM education experience the high school could be duplicated in other Indiana cities.
